The Racist Killer of the Roma Couple in Bulgaria: I Would Do It Again!

Roma Nation Movement·Mittwoch, 9. November 2016

Dear friends, there is no information on this shocking crime in international media. Probably because they are busy with the USA elections or simply because they are biased against the Roma. That is why here is some information available in English which everyone is asked to share. If nobody speaks out about it, if the Bulgarian authorities do not feel some pressure through the social media they may try to draw a veil on this racist murder.

On 5th of November, the 30-years old Ethnic Bulgarian Ivan Nikolov stabbed to death with a knife the Romani couple Vasilka and Asen Ilievi in their own home in the town of Pazardzhik in Bulgaria. He was detained by Police on the next day simply because he wanted to be detained. He explained to the court that he decided to kill some Gypsies because he was inspired by a patriotic song. Then he went to the house of Ilievi family whom he knew and who were very good people in his own words, and brutally murdered them with a knife. They were old people and they could not resist or escape.

After the murder Nikolov went home. He was expecting Police to come and to arrest him. He believed he did a great historical act and he will become a national hero or some kind of media star. He was very disappointed that they did not come for him. At the next morning he returned back to the scene of the crime with a rifle and started shooting at the Romani women on the street. When the Police came Nikolov was yelling that he is the murderer and he want to murder all Roma, but they did not believe him. That made him even more upset. He told the court on 8/11 that he does not feel any guilt, on contrary, he would commit this crime again. The court decided to send him to the Psychiatric clinic at the Prison in the town of Lovetch.

Nikolov has been convicted for different crimes in the past and he is drug addict but he did not steal anything from the house of his victims. He made a full confession saying that his motives were purely racist. However, according to the court he might have some psychologic problems and the head of the Pazardzhik Police told the media that the murder is not ethnically or racially motivated.

If you say the truth that you kill Gypsies because you hate Gypsies it is very unacceptable in Bulgaria after so many years of integration, inclusion and human rights. Another explanation should be found that pleases the authorities – for example he is insane that is why he did it. This is not the first similar case in Bulgaria and it depends on the reaction of the people inside and outside the country whether the authorities will be allowed to declare the killer insane and to release him from responsibility. That definitely would make him a hero in the eyes of many young “Patriots” in Bulgaria. Just like Angel Kaleev who beated and humiliated Mitko from Ovchepoltsi but was released on probation.

About 100 Roma people organized a protest in front of the Pazardzhik court building on 8/11, asking for a just sentence and these people were very disappointed with the decision of the court to send Nikolov to Psyhiatric clinic. Roma community is shocked and maybe it is time to do something ourselves before more killings happen. We all see that countries like Bulgaria, Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia are infected with Antiziganism and Romaphobia. We all see that Europe is pregnant with Fascism and the disintegration of the European Union is a matter of time. We cannot be just passive observers of how history repeat itself. Let’s take an action now!
